Julie Shau Memorial Award Presented at BNCs

IMG_1750It was with both great pleasure and sadness that SWNA introduced and presented a new award at the 2013 Better Newspapers Competition. The Julie Shau Memorial award acknowledges outstanding service, dedication and devotion by an employee working within the community newspapers industry. It is an award that recognizes trust, effort, support and professionalism by an individual who continues to go over and above the call of duty.

This award bears the name of one such person whom was all of these things; and so much more. Julie was an individual that truly cared for the industry she was a part of and strived each and every day to make it better. She touched the lives of those around her – both personally and professionally.

This year’s prestigious award was presented to SWNA’s own Louise Simpson. Office Manager at SWNA, Louise exemplifies professionalism and dedication to the industry and much like Julie, is someone that sets an example for the rest of us.

Going forward, the Julie Shau Award will be open for nominations within the membership at all future SWNA Conventions.

Alison Squires: Past-President’s Report

new_alisonOver the weekend of April 19-20th, SWNA’s Past-President, Alison Squires, delivered a talk during SWNA’s Annual General Meeting. The discussion included an overview of Alison’s role as President, game changers in the industry, as well as key representatives and their roles within the association and the industry.

Cenetary Newspapers of Canada Launches in June

100Calling all editors – are you in charge of a newspaper that is 100 years or older? On June 24-25, the Canadian Newspapers Association will launch a professional network called the Centenary Newspapers of Canada will host a special launch in Winnipeg to bring together editors from across the country. Network and share innovative ideas with some of Canada’s longest standing and most successful newspapers.

Registration to join CNC is only $100, and the first 50 qualified editors to sign up will receive a $500 rebate on airfare to Winnipeg to attend the launch event.

The conference program will include editorial workshops, keynote addresses from Mario Girard of La Presse and John Stackhouse of The Globe and Mail, an exclusive tour of the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights building and a gala celebration of La Liberte’s 100th birthday.

To Fund Longform Journalism, ‘Toronto Star’ Tests Ebook Subscriptions

ebookSeeking new ways to fund longform journalism, newspaper and magazine publishers have lately released a range of short, inexpensive ebooks, featuring repackaged feature articles and archival material, through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other ebook sellers.

Not all publishers are pleased with the resulting income from their ebooks however, especially given the amount of marketing it takes to sell each individual ebook. Canada’s Toronto Star, which has published more than 20 ebooks fashioned from investigative feature articles and special reports, is one of them. In an interview with J-Source’s Eric Mark Do, executives from paper said that they have typically only sold between 100 to 300 copies of each ebook they’ve published, priced at $4.99 apiece.
